scavenger hunt: jan 30

1. texture – This is a very close macro of some moss. From farther away it looks like a beautiful green carpet and it’s velvety smooth to the touch.

2. fog – I went way back in my archives to find a fog photo and actually, it’s not even really fog.  It’s steam coming off one of the hot springs in Yellowstone back in 2007.  See how little the boys were back then!  This trip is the reason I bought my first dslr, although I did leave it on auto for over two years.

3. button – A jar of colorful buttons that I keep on my desk.

4. beverage/drink – a photo that I also used for foto friday’s reflections theme because I like the way the flowers from the placemat are reflected back onto the cup.
IMG_7821w46c
5. seventies – My grandmother made this very seventies looking afghan for me when I was ten in 1976.  Back then, I thought it was kind of ugly.  I tried really hard to look appreciative and like I liked it when she gave it to me.  After 30 years, it’s finally grown on me and now I think it’s quite lovely.

reflections

Time for a few photo challenges.  The theme at foto friday is reflections. And Shannon at living with the lowrys is hosting a brand new linky called a few of my favorite things.

I love the look of pure joy on Mason’s face after I asked him to stick his head out the window!

And I love the look of the sunset reflecting on the lake.

light

I love how the hobby of photography makes me more aware of the light all around me.  I notice shadows, the direction of the light and the color of the light now whether I have my camera with me or not.  And of course I’m always noticing whether or not someone has catchlights in their eyes.

The theme at foto friday is light.  This was taken a few weeks ago when we had a particularly beautiful sunset.  I’ve been watching the sky every evening around sunset time and we haven’t had anything like it since.

I noticed the late afternoon light coming in my window yesterday and I loved the way it lit up one side of my little vase of {fake} flowers.

I took this shot last week at Oakley Plantation.  I have no idea what it is.  I liked the SOOC, but it was definitely missing something.

So I added some fake golden light with pioneer woman’s sunshine action.

oreos

Mason had a couple of friends over to hang out for his day off from school on Monday.  His friend, Hayden, cracked me up with his strong opinions about Oreos.  He’s a big fan of the original cookie as long as you eat them dunked in milk.  He’s very offended by the double stuff version.  He thinks the original version is the perfect combination of cookie and cream.
IMG_8487w
As they were having this serious discussion about Oreos, it occurred to me that the you capture theme this week is circles and I had a bag full of circles right in front of me.

a saturday outing

Since all my guys had a three day weekend, we decided to do something different on Saturday.  We drove up to St. Francisville, Louisiana to tour one the the old plantation homes, Oakley Plantation.  The home is part of the Audubon State Historic Site.  It is named after John James Audubon because he lived at Oakley Plantation for four months in 1821 and completed 32 of his paintings of birds while there.
Before touring the home, we walked on a short trail through the woods.

The tall, airy home was built in 1806 and is surrounded by beautiful old live oaks.

The grounds also include slave cabins and a barn.

This turkey was not happy to have his picture made.   He kept ruffling his feathers at me.
IMG_8252w46
I handed the camera to Mason so there’s even a picture of me and G this time.

I love family outings.  We definitely need to do this more often.
