We went downtown Saturday morning to walk around and see how high the river was before they opened the spillway Saturday afternoon. The orange strip you see on top of the levee is filled with water and gives the city an additional 18 inches of protection. Normally you can walk on the levee which is concrete in the downtown area with nice benches, but everything was roped off so this was as close as we could get.

Then we headed to the new state capitol which was built in 1932. Louisiana has the tallest state capitol building in the U.S. with 34 floors and you can go to the top for a view of the city from every direction on the observation deck that circles around.

This is just inside the entrance. I've been there lots of times, but I'm always surprised at how ornate and beautiful it is.

And this is the view in the opposite direction showing a few governmental buildings in the foreground and the Exxon refinery along with a few other plants in the distance.

If you're ever in Baton Rouge, be sure and go to the top of the state capitol. It's free and the views are spectacular!
We went down to the river this weekend as well to get some pictures. Crazy, isn't it?!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics! It seems like flooding is going to be a bad year along the rivers. We live off the MO river and I feel like we are due for a 20 yr flood but I hope it's not and all affected have minimal damage.
ReplyDeletethe view toward downtown is my favorite! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures - but that flooding is crazy for sure!
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous scenic shots! I feel like I'm there! I love them all :)

ReplyDeleteWow...this was awesome Deb!! I didn't know several of things you shared today.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm shocked at how high the waters are. We were just down there the week before.

I have been wanting to go there for some time...

ReplyDeleteGreat pics as always! Love the shot of the entrance of the capitol! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are wonderful, as usual. You certainly have talent.
ReplyDeleteReally great photos! The flooding is a very scary thing. I am really loving the views from the capitol building!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome trip and I love your photos.
ReplyDeleteI so hope the flooding subsides soon. It's terrible.
Amazing views! That's gotta be scary, though, with the flooding. Be safe!

love these photos.. I hope that the water recedes a bit and people breathe easier soon.
ReplyDeleteThe inside of the capitol.. with the reddish light --that's so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Baton Rouge, so I really enjoyed the photo tour. I heard something about the flooding from England. Looks like everything is okay right now - thank goodness. XOL
ReplyDeleteFantastic shots (as usual). The flooding has been crazy. Hopefully everything goes down and stays down for a while.
ReplyDeleteThoroughly enjoyed the tour! It really is terrifying to see the high water levels, it appears that we are all experiencing flooding at present, no matter where in the world we are living. Very scary!!!
ReplyDeleteI never knew anybody had a state capitol building that tall! Very cool. Crossing my fingers that the water doesn't get any higher.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all the pictures are gorgeous. The capitol building looks gorgeous and I love 1930's architecture. I hope that they are able to manage the flooding so that it doesn't go over the levee.
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love these. I hope my boys grow up to be like yours. They seem really great. :)
